Competing In Bodybuilding/Figure/Physique/Bikini/Fitness: Let's Talk About It!!
If you have a passion for fitness, working out, eating well coupled with a desire and goal to compete, read this. You only live once, so go for it!! I have trained numerous women for fitness competitions and it is a journey you will never forget. It is an experience that will teach you so much about yourself. In order to compete it takes passion, dedication, motivation and complete commitment. The reality is you will never know how hard it really is for competitors to get to stage until you have gone through the process yourself.
If you are an outsider looking in, you can see that competitors work really hard! When you do it yourself you realize it takes complete focus and that only you can do the work. Having an excellent coach really helps. Coaches are there to support you through the obvious things like your workout plans, cardio plans, workout supplement plans and such. Also to train you on posing and presentation and most important to be your cheerleader. That being said, a coach is not your daily therapist. I say this because to do a competition you should have such intrinsic motivation that you WANT to do your workouts and you WANT to eat according to your goals because you WANT to do the very best you can do. Your coach will always want you to succeed but at the end of the day you have to want to do the work.
When I watch competitions it is very obvious who has done the work. One of the first things you will notice is who has practiced posing because they will stand out on stage right away catching your attention. Confidence will ooze out of them. They will be on stage looking natural, polished and graceful.
Some tips for the ladies, make sure you hire a great makeup artist who is well versed in doing amazing stage makeup and hair. FYI: sometimes with hair less is more. I see some crazy up do's or off the top curls like curly sue and it takes away from the total package. If you’re not sure try some hair do’s before show day with your suit on and see what works for you. Ensure your suit fits perfect. I have seen some really saggy bottoms and this does not help in showing off your glutes and hamstrings. Please don't pick white for suit fabric, yes it pops on stage but when you are full of stage tan it can look super dirty, opt for gem stones. In addition, smile, even if you’re a bodybuilder and are trying to pose as hard as it can be, please smile.
Start today, tomorrow never comes. You only live once. Make your dreams a reality.
